Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) was arrested yesterday for driving while under the influence yesterday, Alexandria police said. Crapo, 61, was arrested for drunk driving about 12:45 a.m. Sunday after an officer on patrol saw a car blow through a red light. The officer stopped the car, identified Crapo and arrested him after the senator failed several sobriety tests, according to a police news release. Crapo’s blood alcohol content level was 0.11 percent. The legal limit in Virginia is 0.08 percent.

Crapo was taken to the Alexandria Adult Detention Facility and later released on a $1,000 bond.

Through a spokesperson, Crapo issued an apology:

I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.

Crapo, in his third term, was sticking around Washington as part of a bipartisan group of eight senators attempting to hammer out some kind of budget and tax deal by December 31 to prevent the federal government from tumbling over the so-called “fiscal cliff.”

Crapo has publicly stated in the past that as a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he follows the Mormon custom of abstaining from alcohol. Well, he might need to come up with a new line.

Crapo is due in court on January 4.
