Meet the Press will be investigated by D.C. police over a segment on its most recent show in which host David Gregory displayed a 30-round magazine similar to the one used in the shooting spree earlier this month at an elementary school in Connecticut.

On last Sunday’s broadcast, Gregory interviewed Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. During LaPierre’s appearance, Gregory grilled his guest on whether the federal government should restrict access to certain types of firearms and ammunition.

At one point, Gregory held up a 30-bullet magazine akin to the one used in the Bushmaster .223 semi-automatic rifle used by Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza.

But in holding up the magazine, Gregory and Meet the Press might have crossed D.C.’s stringent gun regulations. D.C. code stipulates that high-capacity ammunition is illegal, stipulating that “No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm.” NBC’s venerable public affairs program is filmed at NBC4’s studio at 4001 Nebraska Avenue NW.

Furthermore, D.C. residents like Gregory are only permitted to own ammunition if they are registered gun owners. Simply possessing ammunition that does not match a registered firearm can lead to arrest, such as in the case of Adam Meckler, a former Army specialist who was arrested in September 2011 after police spotted a few stray rounds in a bag he was carrying.

Office Tisha Gant, a Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman, confirmed the investigation is pending but said she could not elaborate any further.

NBC News did not reply to a request for comment.
