No, Gmail and Yahoo! won’t do any longer. Members and staff of the D.C. Council were told yesterday that come March, they won’t be allowed to use their private email accounts to conduct public business any longer.

The explicit addition to the council’s operating rules—made by Council Chair Phil Mendelson—come in the wake of an October lawsuit filed by the Open Government Coalition, which sought to compel councilmembers to stop using private emails to do the public’s work. Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), for one, has long been known to use an private email account to send messages on public matters.

Last July, Mayor Vince Gray issued an order strongly discouraging the use of private email accounts, saying that if they must be used, copies of any messages sent should also be sent to their government accounts.
