>> D.C. police and firefighters recovered the body of Michael Steven Poe last night from a ventilation shaft in a building on the 1800 block of Biltmore Street NW. Poe, a 23-year-old Maryland resident, had been missing since the early hours of Tuesday following a night of celebrating New Year’s at Shenanigan’s Irish Pub, a bar in Adams Morgan. Police suspect he later proceeded to a party on the rooftop of an apartment building on Biltmore Street, and are still investigating whether his 50-foot fall was accidental or intentional. >> Virginia Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling suspended his gubernatorial campaign in November, but he might be wading back into the race, this time as an independent, The Washington Post reports. Bolling, a lifelong Republican, lags in his party behind Attorney General Ken “The Cooch” Cuccinelli, who is presumed to be the beneficiary of a revamped way in which the Virginia Republican Party will select its nominees.
>> Depending on the outcome of Sunday’s playoff game between the ‘Skins and the Seattle Seahawks, there could be a new banner flying over the John A. Wilson Building. Or, if the ‘Skins win, Seattle residents will have to look at one of D.C.’s flags. Mayor Vince Gray said on Fox 5 last night that he is betting Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn that if the ‘Skins prevail, Seattle City Hall will display a flag bearing the motto “Taxation Without Representation.” It’s the same bet Gray made with the mayor of St. Louis when the Nationals faced the Cardinals in last year’s National League Division Series.

This Day in DCist: Last year, Melody Records announced it was closing, and a bunch of D.C. officials announced their pointless (and thankfully aborted) cross-country tour on behalf of statehood.
