>> Originally from D.C., pianist Lenny Marcus spent many years in New Orleans playing with a number of the Crescent City’s best. After returning to the area, he quickly established himself as an in-demand musician. >> Big Sam’s Funky Nation, an outfit out of New Orleans, brings its blend of high-voltage funk, rock, jazz and hip-hop to the Millennium Stage on Thursday. 6 p.m. Free.

>> Drawing from zydeco, New Orleans jazz and Caribbean calypso, BeauSoleil are the most visible band in the Cajun music scene. The group will be at the Barns of Wolf Trap on Thursday for an 8 p.m. show. $27 + fees.

>> Star smooth jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright comes to Blues Alley on Thursday to start a four night run of 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $43 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Vibraphonist Warren Wolf leads a group of excellent local musicians on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Oliver Mtukudzi is Zimbabwe’s most successful songwriter and his 30+ year career has earned him the title of the ““Godfather of Afropop.” His show on Friday at the Atlas is sold out, but it’s worth contacting the box office for last minute availability.

>> Drummer Aaron Seeber won a number of honors as an area high school student, and is now pursuing a music degree at SUNY Purchase. He will lead a group on Friday at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Drummer Quincy Phillips earned his reputation by laying it down for The Young Lions. He will be leading some of the area’s finest, including bassist Kris Funn, pianist Janelle Gill and saxophonist Tim Green, this Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $18.

>> HR-57 hosts regulars Antonio Parker (Friday) and Kent Williams (Saturday). 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $15.

>> This year, the National Symphony Orchestra launched its In Your Neighborhood program, which brings orchestra members to parts of the city that may not be exposed to the goings-on at the Kennedy Center. The program is in the U Street/Shaw area this week and on Saturday will be at Twins Jazz. The concert will feature NSO members teaming up with bassist Eric Wheeler‘s trio. 8 and 10 p.m. sets.

>> Transparent Productions has spent nearly two decades presenting cutting edge jazz at venues around the city. The organization continues its Sundays @ 7 series at Bohemian Caverns this week with a duo featuring cellist Daniel Levin and saxophonist Rob Brown. 7 p.m. $15 in advance/$20 at the door.

>> CapitalBop continues its excellent Jazz Loft series at Chez Billy on Sunday. This iteration features bands led by three of the area’s up-and-coming horn players, including saxophonist Tedd Baker, trumpeter JS Williams and clarinetist Joseph Howell. The proceedings begin at 7 p.m. $15 suggested donation.

>> D.C.-based guitar whiz Anthony Pirog leads his trio through 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Sunday at Twins Jazz. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Iranian musician Kalhor, a master of the Persian spiked fiddle, kamancheh, performs a show on Monday at the Kennedy Center‘s Theater Lab with Turkish folk musician, composer, and singer Erdal Erzincan. The 6 p.m. show is free, but tickets are required and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning at 5:30 in the States Gallery/Roof Terrace level.

>> Blue Monday Blues hosts Eddie Jones and the Young Bucks. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Smooth jazz keyboardist Patrick Cooper teams up with saxophonist Phillip Martin for 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Monday at Blues Alley. $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Drummer Lenny Robinson continues his run as Bohemian Caverns‘ January Artist-in-Residence on Tuesday. 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets. $10 in advance/$15 at the door.

>> Angela Stribling is best known as a host for programs on the BET network. She is also an accomplished vocalist and will be performing 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley on Tuesday. $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
