D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson and Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) will meet with White House officials tomorrow to discuss a ceremonial resolution the council passed earlier this week urging President Obama to put the city’s “Taxation Without Representation” license plates on his limo. According to a spokeswoman for Cheh’s office, the two will meet with the White House Department of Intergovernmental Affairs in the afternoon.
During Tuesday’s legislation session, a number of councilmembers said that the least Obama could do for the cause of D.C. voting rights is sport the license plates, much like President Clinton did. Cheh floated the idea of marching to the White House and demanding that the license plates be placed on the limo, while Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) had a more radical idea: have the legislators toss the license plates and screwdrivers over the White House fence.
Cheh’s office said that specially made license plates bearing the number “44” have yet to be delivered, but another person with knowledge of the situation said that the D.C. DMV was balking at handing over a license plate that Obama probably couldn’t use. (The fleet of presidential limos apparently has its own series of numbered license plates.) We put in a request for comment from the DMV, but have yet to hear back.
