The Old Ebbitt Grill is a place for Washington’s movers and shakers, the type of people who always need to be connected to what’s going on. And while technology today makes it so that getting the news on the go requires little more than looking at your smart phone, the Old Ebbitt Grill will now give you all the news you need to know—when you pay your bill.

The 15th Street NW restaurant recently entered into a partnership with a company that has turned the printers that pump out itemized receipts into a printing press of sorts, providing a receipt-sized page of the most current Associated Press headlines for patrons to browse as they pay their bills. When I stopped by yesterday, a quick drink ended with a summary of news that I had missed the hour prior: Labor Secretary Hilda Solis had resigned her post, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will likely testify before Congress on the Benghazi attack of January 22.

It’s a cute idea, but in this era of mobile everything, what’s the point? Print Signal Corp., the company behind the idea, explained: “If successful, this will create a new channel to disseminate news and advertising to millions of readers on an existing platform never used for this purpose. The printed updates have several advantages in this venue over the smartphone, providing access to the news without people becoming absorbed in their devices at the same time contributing to table conversation and interaction.”

“We’ve got thousands of news-hungry Washingtonians coming to lunch, so we’re giving The Latest News a shot,” David Moran, Old Ebbit’s managing director, said in a press release. “If this works at the Old Ebbitt, it just might sweep across the world.”
