It’s official. The District of Columbia licence plates bearing the slogan “Taxation Without Representation” are once again affixed to a presidential vehicle, though perhaps not the one actually carrying the president.
The plates, which members of the D.C. Council presented to the White House January 11, made their debut this morning when President Obama and Michelle Obama traveled across town to take part in a National Day of Service event.
The first couple left the White House shortly after 11 a.m. headed for Burrville Elementary School in far Northeast D.C., where they joined about 500 City Year volunteers in completing a “school makeover,” according to pool reports. As the Obamas’ motorcade rolled out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, the lead vehicle—three Chevrolet Suburban sport-utility vehicles—sported D.C. license plate No. 800 002 featuring the pro-statehood tag line. (There are three vehicles bearing the District tags as the cars are meant to be identical.) The other cars in the lineup, however, bore Virginia or federal government plates.
Still, it’s a start to the White House’s announcement Tuesday that it would begin using the “Taxation Without Representation” license plates for the first time since President Bill Clinton left office. Even if the president wasn’t in that lead Suburban, at least he was in close proximity.
