>> A jazz-metal band, you say? Yup, that’s exactly what you’re getting at a Jerseyband show, which features horn section and hardcore vocalist backed by drums, electric guitar, and guitar synth. The ensemble’s wall of sound has been compared to Frank Zappa and Meshuggah, but these musicians have created their own musical category, Lungcore. Jerseyband will be at the Atlas tonight for an 8 p.m. pay-what-you-can show.

>> Clarinetist Joseph D. Howell continues his Wednesday night run at Twins Jazz this evening. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Red Baraat has found the space that exists between the swagger of a New Orleans brass band and the infectious rhythms of South Asian bhangra music. The group will be at 9:30 Club on Thursday, playing in support of its latest release, Shruggy Ji. Stay tuned for a full preview. 6 p.m. doors. $20.

>> Indie Adams Morgan is a new effort that aims to bring live bands to Adams Morgan’s Club Heaven & Hell. This week’s show, taking place on Thursday, features local guitar whiz John Lee and his new trio. 7 p.m. $10.

>> Centered around Parisian vocalist Rachel Sberro, Trio Ode roots its sound in classic French chanson, but also incorporates the music of Tin Pan Alley and original material into its performances. The group will be at Twins Jazz on Thursday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Vibraphonist Roy Ayers is a soul-jazz legend, and next to icon James Brown, considered hip-hop’s most sampled artist. On Thursday, Ayers will begin a four night stand of 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. $35 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Caribbean jazz group Los Caribbeat will be at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge on Thursday. 10 p.m. $5.

>> Area guitarist Earl Wilson celebrates his birthday this Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. His band will feature a number of the area’s top musicians, including saxophonist Lyle Link. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Eddie Palmieri has long been recognized as one of the premiere Latin jazz pianists. He will be leading his septet on Friday at the Kennedy Center‘s Terrace Theater. Tickets are still available for the 9:30 p.m. set. $35.

>> Saxophonist Kenneth Whalum, III is a rising star whose debut album, To Those Who Believe, features a who’s who of New York’s Nu Jazz scene. He has also played sessions for the likes of Jay-Z, Beyonce and Mary J. Blige. Whalum will be at Bohemian Caverns on Friday and Saturday, leading a group through 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $18 in advance/$23 at the door.

>> Drummer Tony Martucci has long been a first call drummer among local musicians. On Friday and Saturday, he will lead his own group at Twins Jazz. Also on stage will be saxophonists Jeff Antoniuk and Luis Hernandez, bassist Tom Baldwin and guitarist John Lee. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> HR-57 hosts saxophonist Antonio Parker (Friday) and Latin jazz vocalist Alfredo Mojica (Saturday). 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $15.

>> William Hooker has been an influential drummer in the avant-garde scene since the ’70s. On Sunday at Bohemian Caverns, he will team up with guitar alchemist Anthony Pirog to explore the outer limits of jazz. Also on the bill is Mind Over Matter, Music Over Mind, a trio comprised of bassist Luke Stewart, turntablist Bobby Hill and electronic artist Thomas Stanley. The performance will conclude with a collaboration between the two groups. 7 p.m. $15 in advance/$20 at the door.

>> The DC Jazz Composers Collective was formed by up-and-coming musicians who wanted to create a way to support and spread original music by the local jazz community. The DCJCC will perform at Twins Jazz on Sunday, performing the music of guest saxophonist, John Kocur. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Blue Monday Blues hosts vocalist Shirletta Settles and her band.

>> Vocalist René Marie spent quite a bit of time as an under-recognized talent, but thankfully the last few years have brought her the increased exposure that she so deserves. Marie will be at The Hamilton on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. show. Ubiquitous local MC, Christylez, will open. $27.50 + fees.

>> Ace local drummer Lenny Robinson concludes his run as Artist-in-Residence at Bohemian Caverns on Tuesday. 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets. $10 in advance/$15 at the door.

>> Wynton Marsalis has been at the forefront of the jazz world since the ’80s, having coming from a prominent musical family, directing Jazz at Lincoln Center and being a tireless spokesman for the art form. The Washington Performing Arts Society will bring Marsalis to the Kennedy Center on Tuesday, along with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. 8 p.m. $35-$85.

>> Six-time Grammy nominee composer and pianist Omar Sosa, a native of Cuba, will team up with celebrated Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu at Blues Alley on Tuesday for an intimate duo performance. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
