Yet again, credit card payment options in D.C. taxicabs will be delayed, though this time one for a few weeks.

The D.C. Taxicab Commission reported yesterday that a lack of quorum pushed back planned approval of rules that would mandate credit card payment options in all D.C. cabs by the end of March. The rules should be approved next week, though, meaning that we should—and we stress the word “should”—see long-awaited credit card readers in the city’s 6,500 cabs by mid-April.

Credit card payment options in D.C. cabs have been a long-running saga. Last summer, D.C. announced that it had signed a $35 million contract to install a single type of smart meter in all cabs. That contract was protested and eventually withdrawn, leaving the commission with the option of either rebidding the contract or telling cabbies that they could choose any method of accepting credit cards by a specific date.

In the meantime, a number of apps have emerged that offer riders a chance to hail a cab and pay via credit card, including myTaxi, Taxi Magic and Uber Taxi.
