The 2012-2013 Washington Wizards evaded the potential ignominy of being the worst team in NBA history with a win last week, but let’s face it: they’re still pretty bad! But perhaps the frustrated Wizards fan can take some solace in knowing that owner Ted Leonsis is sorry the depressed masses who keep turning up to the Verizon Center have to watch such a crummy team.

In an interview on WTOP today, Leonsis offered some regret for the Wizards’ shoddy affairs, teed off by the team’s ghastly 12-game losing streak to open the season (h/t to D.C. Sports Bog for posting a transcript):

We didn’t win a game in our first dozen games. And the fans, they’re bottom-line oriented. They want you to win. And again, I apologize. There’s nothing we can do about that one.

Leonsis continued, saying that perhaps now that the team has kinda, sorta gelled, the last few months of the season might not be as painful.

“If we can play .500 basketball from here on out, at least it would give us a signal that the players that we’ve put in place and have under contract and the coaching staff, that plan was starting to come to fruition,” Leonsis said.

Playing a .500 record the rest of the way might be a bit tricky, especially with so much of the rest of the Eastern Conference with a legitimate chance at a playoff spot. The Wizards, at 11-33, are only half a game ahead in the standings than the league-worst Charlotte Bobcats, and with an upcoming schedule that includes playoff contenders like the Memphis Grizzlies, New York Knicks, and the NBA-best San Antonio Spurs, things are only looking grimmer.

And if they go .500 of the course of the remaining 38 games, they’ll still finish with a record of 30-52. Plenty of teams have done far worse, but that’s still pretty ugly.
