A member of an advisory neighborhood commission in Southwest D.C. was ordered last week to pay nearly $20,000 when a judge ordered him to make good on three years of missed condominium fees.
Ron McBee, who sits on ANC 6D (single member district 03) in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood, was found not to have paid the monthly dues to the condominium association at his building, Capitol Park II at 827 Third Street SW. According to a February 1 order issued in D.C. Superior Court, McBee owes $14,841.61 in association fees dating back to 2009 or earlier. Additionally, Magistrate Judge Joseph E. Beshouri ordered McBee to make good on $1,380 in overdue charges and to cover the condo association’s legal costs of $3,450.
The cost of a missed or late payment at Capitol Park II is $30, suggesting that McBee, who previously served as chairman of ANC 6D, was found to be delinquent on 46 months of association fees.
“I find it morally repugnant that a neighborhood representative would do this,” a person familiar with the case says.
McBee, who declined to reply to emails and calls to his city-provided phone, did not appear at the hearing, despite receiving multiple subpoenas delivered to both his home and to the Starbucks cafe inside a Safeway supermarket in his neighborhood. A search for McBee—whose legal name is James—in D.C. Courts records shows that he is also in arrears to Washington Gas Holdings.
The monthly fees at Capitol Park II have hovered around $300 a month or more for the past few years. The monthly cost was $308 in 2010, $302 in 2011, $321 in 2012, and $328 in 2013.
Beshouri’s ruling, which was handed down with McBee absent from the courtroom, orders the commissioner to make restitution of the owed condominium fees plus any additional interest.
