Two students at the University of Maryland were killed and a third is in serious condition in an area hospital after an shooting last night that police are calling a murder-suicide. The shooting took place last night in a College Park neighborhood next to the U.Md. campus about 1 a.m., the Prince George’s Police Department said.

The incident occurred at a house occupied by three students on the 8700 block of 36th Avenue, about a block away from the entrance to the Maryland campus. According to The Washington Post, the student who opened fire and ultimately took his own life did so after lighting a fire in the basement of the residence:

Police said investigators believe that one of the roommates lit a fire in the basement of the home, and his two roommates confronted him about it.

All three men then went outside, to the front of the house, where the student who had started the blaze allegedly shot one of the roommates, police said.

As the second roommate tried to flee, the gunman shot him as well, police said. The suspect then went to the back of the house, where he turned the gun on himself, police said.

Julie Parker, a spokeswoman for Prince George’s Police, wrote in an early-morning tweet that the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide. The names of the students have not been released, pending notification of their families.

“The University of Maryland community awoke this morning to heartbreak,” U.Md. President Wallace Loh said in a statement released by the school today. “We are all shocked and saddened by this morning’s tragic events. We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to the families and friends of the victims. Ours is a university of great resolve. Together, we will emerge from our collective sadness.”

Loh also said that the university’s counseling and religious worship facilities would be open for students in need of support.
