Photo by specimenlifeA pedestrian was hit and killed today while trying to cross New York Avenue NE early this morning. According to police, the pedestrian was hit in the 1300 block of New York Avenue NE; he was reportedly 150 feet from the closest crosswalk. The driver remained on the scene after the incident.
The death comes only a day after a 94-year-old woman was hit and killed near the 2800 block of Georgia Avenue NW, where she was crossing Harvard Street in a crosswalk when she was hit by a driver making a right turn. The driver was cited.
Earlier this week, two women were hit by a car while jaywalking across Massachusetts Avenue near American University. The driver left the scene of the incident.
Last August the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that a stubbornly high proportion of all traffic fatalities in D.C. are pedestrians, in part because the city a dense urban environment. Still, according to MPD, that percentage jumped significantly from 2002 to 2008, and city officials are now renewing their focus on pedestrian safety.
Another pedestrian was killed yesterday in Silver Spring, reported Silver Spring Patch.
