Friday is the day that we traditionally post Overheard in D.C., but this being Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d make an exception. Two different people caught the exchange below, so there are slight differences. Still, the message and the delivery are much the same—and certainly prove that people can celebrate Valentine’s Day in their own, very different ways.
On the 53 bus on Valentine’s morning:
Mid-forties woman shouts loudly, but pleasantly, to the fully occupied bus: “Happy Valentines Day everyone!!!”
Fellow passengers: *chuckle and smile* some return the well-wishes.
A few minutes pass and the well-wisher’s phone rings. She answers: “Good morning Gwen. Well Happy valentines day to you too!” I’m fine. How about you? (Pause) I sure am. On my way now to the courthouse to sign the divorce papers.”

On the bus this morning: a lovely woman wishes everyone that gets on the bus a very enthusiastic “Happy Valentine’s Day!” Everyone returns the sentiment (with varying degrees of enthusiasm).
And then her phone rings… “Happy Valentine’s Day, Susan. I’m on my way to the courthouse to finalize my divorce!!”
And the entire bus starts laughing and congratulating her.
