Michael Landrum’s chain of burger shops and steakhouses is continuing to get smaller. And now, perhaps the most famous of the chef and restaurateur’s establishments is no more. Washingtonian reports that “For Rent” signs recently appeared in the front windows of Ray’s Hell-Burger and its sister restaurant, Hell-Burger Too, in Arlington.
Ray’s Hell-Burger, which won some international recognition when President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden stopped in there for lunch in June 2009, has been closed since January, appears to be done for good, according to Washingtonian:
We spotted “for rent” signs in the windows of both restaurants, which appear to have been mainly cleared of their furnishings, despite “Ray’s Hell Burger” and “Nice ’n’ Greasy Steak ’n’ Cheesy” banners above their respective doors (the cheesesteak concept shared menu space with Hell-Burger Too). While owner Michael Landrum was not available for comment at the time of this post, Ominex, the real estate company responsible for 1723 and 1725 Wilson Boulevard, confirmed that the two locations are available for lease.
Another of Landrum’s restaurants, Rays to the Third, remains open with a menu of those well-regarded hamburgers and cheesesteaks.
But Landrum’s footprint on the local restaurant scene is clearly receding Last December, DCist reported that his Ward 7 restaurant, Ray’s the Steaks at East River, was out of business.
