A new bill introduced in the Maryland House of Delegates today would allow for marijuana to be legally sold to anyone over 21 and would authorize the state to tax it like it does alcohol.

Delegate Curt Anderson (D-Baltimore City) introduced the bill, which would remove penalties for possession and growing at home for those over the age of 21, allow the state to license marijuana retail stores and wholesale facilities, and impose an excise tax of $50 per ounce on wholesale sales. (The law comes just a little too late for rapper 2 Chainz, who was recently arrested on the Eastern Shore with a small amount of marijuana.)

In January, another bill legalizing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes was similarly introduced in the House of Delegates. In 2011, Maryland legislators passed legislation allowing for the use of an affirmative defense for those arrested with marijuana—anyone with less than an ounce on them who can prove medical necessity would only face a fine.
