Even though local bookstores are struggling, D.C. public libraries are circulating more and more material every year. Last year’s 3.3 million materials circulated is triple what the library system recorded in 2006, for one.
But what is it that residents love reading? In 2012 it was J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy that was most often checked out by adults, followed by Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, Junot Diaz’s This is How You Lose Her, John Grisham’s The Racketeer, and David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas.
In terms of downloads—which are an increasing part of the library’s circulation—E.L. James’ sexy Fifty Shades of Grey led all comers, followed by Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending, Tea Obreht’s The Tiger’s Wife and George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones.
And though 2011’s across-the-board winner Bossypants by Tina Fey seemed to finally fall from grace (or everyone in town already read it), it still led the audiobook category.
As for movies, well, Downton Abbey takes top honors, followed by The Avengers and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Snow White and the Huntsman, and The Hunger Games.
