Forbes released its annual list of the world’s billionaires, and guess what? You’re not on it! Well, maybe you are. And, if so, please send cash ASAP.
This being Boomtown, of course, the D.C. area has its share of people whose net worths feature 10 or 11 digits to the left side of the decimal point. Their wealth comes from real estate, private equity, manufacturing, inheritances, and other sources. Once again, the District itself is home to just a single billionaire, the manufacturing magnate Steven Rales.
Jacqueline Mars, inheritor of the candy company of the same name who lives in The Plains, Va., topped all local billionaires with a fortune of $17 billion. In total, 12 of the world’s 1,342 billionaires call the Washington area home. Potomac remains home to all but one of suburban Maryland’s billionaires, while several of Virginia’s opt for Fairfax County.
