What has the world come to when school districts are restricting hugs? That’s exactly what a new set of guidelines for public elementary schools in Maryland’s St. Mary’s county is doing, according to Southern Maryland Newspapers:

New rules for visitors to St. Mary’s County public elementary schools ban hugs and homemade food to anyone other than a parent’s own child.

The guidelines, which are now in effect, limit the activities of some volunteers, school officials said, but are needed to ensure a safe environment.

The rules, which were in part motivated by concerns that arose in the wake of the Newtown massacre, also prohibit students or parents from handing out birthday invitations during schools hours because students who are not invited could have their feeling hurt.
