There’s a new threat out there for residents of Frederick, Md. Recently, churchgoers, drivers, and even cyclists have found themselves at the mercy of a dole of male turkeys. The birds have been captured on camera chasing after people leaving a church on Opossumtown Pike, pecking at people rolling by on bikes, and even jumping on car windshields, WUSA9 reports.

One near-victim of these mad turkeys even compared the experience to being trapped in a monster movie:

The tom turkeys were apparently out to protect their hens. They gobbled, and then chased after her and first grade teacher Debra Wilcox, who had noticed a whole rafter of turkeys in the church yard and gone out to investigate.

Wilcox says they were like the velociraptors in Jurassic Park.

Turkeys, in fact, are believed to be descended not from velociraptors, but from species belonging to the genus Archaeopteryx, which bridged the evolution between dinosaurs and modern birds. And in 2006, archaeologists in Utah discovered 75 million-year-old fossils of Hagryphus giganteus, which took the form of a seven-foot-tall turkey-like creature. Researchers estimated it could run at speeds similar to a contemporary ostrich.

But in present-day Frederick, residents might be scared for their life over these turkeys, but the church that they have been pecking outside is taking a more friendly approach. “Now we welcome turkeys,” Pastor Katie Penick of Faith United Church of Christ told WUSA.

However, not everyone might not be up for greeting the mad turkeys so warmly. Maryland’s spring turkey season begins soon, and the National Wild Turkey Federation offers many delicious recipes on its website, such as spicy roast turkey wings, seasoned with nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, and allspice. Mmm, delicious.
