Mayor Vince Gray and members of the D.C. Council received tickets to two NCAA games being played in the Verizon Center this week—one yesterday, one tomorrow—and NBC4 reports that they used them in different ways.

Gray used the access that he has to one suite yesterday to host a number of technology leaders; Gray has been pushing to fashion D.C. into a new tech hub. Tomorrow he’ll host a number of congressional staffers. A number of councilmembers gave their tickets away, some to community groups, some to staff, and others for use in raffles. Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3), though, opted to trade the tickets for access to Caps games.

Gray and the councilmembers have always enjoyed access to the Verizon Center and Nationals Park, but the perk has often caused problems. During Mayor Adrian Fenty’s term in office, he was accused of not distributing tickets to legislators. More recently, councilmembers have strangely fought for access to particular shows; Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), for one, once demanded tickets to a Lady Gaga show. Gray himself was found to be handing the tickets to family and staff. (Fenty did much the same.)

Last year Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) proposed enshrining in law exactly how the tickets should be distributed among elected officials; D.C. Republicans have said that they’d like to see the tickets auctioned off to avoid the foolish fights that invariably arise over who gets them.
