>> Friends and family of a 34-year-old man shot and killed by a D.C. police officer in Southeast D.C. yesterday are demanding answers, reports the Post. Police claim that Cleman R. Sweptson Jr. was shot after pulling a gun and firing at an officer, but family members say that he wasn’t known to carry a gun. A gun was recovered at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
>> The NRA has threatened to sue to stop a new gun control bill in Maryland that bans assault weapons and limits the sizes of magazines, writes the Examiner. The bill prohibits the sale and ownership of 45 different “assault” weapons; the gun lobby claims that the law is unconstitutional and prevents law-abiding residents from protecting themselves.
>> Roads around the White House were closed off to traffic earlier this morning, and NBC4 reports that a man has been arrested and charged with making felony threats. The Secret Service and Park Police investigated what they thought was a suspicious package inside a vehicle, but reopened the area to traffic at around 6:45 a.m.
Briefly Noted: D.C. celebrates its centenarians … The Silver Spring Transit Center won’t be open for at least another year … Bill that would hold back D.C. third graders who can’t read fails to move forward … The reason D.C. is awesome: “Yo-Yo Ma joins former Guns N’ Roses drummer to call for arts funding” … Man accused in scary Georgetown sexual assault.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2012, a one-time D.C. teacher made it on the FBI’s most wanted list and the Caribbean Festival faced an uncertain future. In 2011, we marveled at D.C. in Lego.
