The Watha T. Daniel Library in Shaw.

Nine D.C. libraries have closed to the public for the remainder of the day due to high temperatures inside the buildings. The libraries are: Watha T. Daniel-Shaw, West End, Woodridge, Southwest, Lamond-Riggs, Deanwood, Southeast, Shepherd Park, and Takoma Park.

According to DCPL spokesman George Williams, most libraries will reopen as scheduled tomorrow, though some could remain closed for longer due to age and inside temperatures. Councilmember Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) announced in an email that Lamond-Riggs, Shepherd Park and Takoma Park could remain closed until Friday; all of them are older buildings and it takes time for heating system to be changed over to cooling.

“The D.C. Public Library tells us that cooling and heating systems that operate these three libraries are old and require at least one full day (and not just the flip of a switch) to switch from heat to air conditioning,” she wrote.

Mind you, it’s April.
