>> The Howard University Jazz Ensemble performs on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Jason Marsalis is the youngest member of the most famous family in jazz. He is best known for his prodigious drumming talents, but he will showcase a different aspect of his musicality on Friday at the Kennedy Center, where he will lead a group while playing the vibraphone. 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets. $26-$30 + fees.

>> Veteran area guitarist Rick Whitehead performs an 8 p.m. set on Friday at the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Club on Friday. $20 + food/drink minimum.

>> Hugh Masekela played a noteworthy role in South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, and is among the first African jazz musicians to break in Europe and North America. The legendary trumpeter will be at the Lisner Auditorium on Friday for an 8 p.m. show. $30-$45 + fees.

>> Brad Mehldau is a pianist of the highest order and is rightfully recognized as a master improviser. Always putting himself into unusual musical situations, Mehldau will perform at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on Friday with mandolin player Chris Thile, who is best known for fronting the progressive alt-bluegrass trio Nickel Creek. 8 p.m. $28-$35.

>> Warren Wolf is a Baltimore native who is earning notice for his skills as a vibraphonist. He will lead a band through 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. $20 online/$25 at the door.

>> Pianist Eric Lewis is a dynamic musician who has found a great deal of crossover success by covering contemporary rock and pop songs. He will be at HR-57 on Friday and Saturday. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $25.

>> Trumpeter JS Williams leads a quartet on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. The band will celebrate the release of his new album, The Late BLUEmer. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Cheikh Ndoye is a virtuoso bassist that combines jazz with his West African roots. Locally based, his career is starting to take off and he will be leading a group of all-star musicians this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Blues Alley. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $35 + minimum/surcharge.

>> The Kennedy Center hosts The New Orleans Bingo! Show on Saturday, another experiment under Artistic Advisor Jason Moran. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will provide the music for a performance that takes the audience through a multi-media tour of the Crescent City, featuring burlesque, aerialists, dance music and puppetry. 8:30 p.m. $20-$48 + fees.

>> The Black Rock Center for the Arts hosts harmonica whiz Frédéric Yonnet on Saturday. 8 p.m. $29-$32.

>> CapitalBop‘s Jazz Loft returns on Sunday with an outdoor performance at Chez Billy. The lineup includes saxophonists Frank Mitchell (Thievery Corporation) and Russell Kirk, as well as bassist Herman Burney. 7 p.m. $15 suggested donation.

>> Matthew Shipp started gaining notice in the early ’90s as a fresh voice in New York’s free jazz scene. Since then, he has reigned in his playing somewhat, but still pushes boundaries.
