The polls just opened in D.C., which means that you should be putting on your Tuesday best, giving our voter guide one last look, pinning a little American flag pin to your lapel, and marching off to do your democratic duty. If you don’t, you just may well be a communist.

Polls are open across the city through 8 p.m., and you should cast a ballot where you would in any normal election. (Find your polling place here.) As long as you’re in line by 8, you’ll be able to cast your ballot.

You’ll be voting for two things: an At-Large member of the D.C. Council (Anita Bonds, Patrick Mara, Elissa Silverman, Matthew Frumin, Paul Zukerberg, and Perry Redd are the contenders) and in a referendum that seeks to amend the Home Rule Charter to give city officials more control over locally raised dollars. We don’t usually endorse in any of the races, but we are asking you to vote yes on the referendum question.

If you have any problems or just want to share your election enthusiasm, tweet us at @DCist or email us at tips@dcist.com. Once polls close, we’ll be on hand at the D.C. Board of Elections to see the results tallied up.
