An off-duty Metropolitan Police Department officer was shot and killed during a domestic dispute last night in Upper Marlboro, Md., Prince George’s Police said. The officer, Joseph Burrough Newell, was shot about 8 p.m., according to the Prince George’s Police Department.
The shooting took place on the 6700 block of Green Moss Drive at the home of one of the officer’s relatives. Officers responding to the scene at first believed the suspect was still inside and called in for a barricade. The house was eventually cleared out a few hours later, though no one was found, Officer Nicole Hubbard, a PGPD spokeswoman said.
Early investigations suggest the shooting stemmed from a dispute over yard work, according to a PGPD news release.
Police have identified Newell’s stepson, Antwan Rayvon James, as the suspect and this morning obtained a warrant for his arrest. Rayvon, 27, is described as a black male, six feet tall, weighing about 170 pounds, and is believed to be carrying a handgun. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans, and black boots.
MPD officials did not respond to requests for comment.
