Dish of the Week: Pulled pork sandwich

Where: American Ice Company, Kangaroo Boxing Club, The Standard

We’ve told you where to drink on a roof and on a patio, and with the weather finally—finally!—warming up, there’s only one more logical next step: where to drink while eating some barbecue. Because there’s probably no finer way to while away a warm afternoon or evening than with a beer and a sweet, smoky pile of shredded pork on a bun.

They say good things come to those who wait, and this is most certainly true in the case of pulled pork. A perfect specimen of pulled pork can only be achieved through slow, patient cooking, allowing the meat to fall apart as it bastes in its own delicious, glistening fat. Kangaroo Boxing Club (3410 11th St NW) smokes its pigs for 16 hours over hickory and applewood for a deep flavor and melting texture. If you like slaw on your sandwich, try the pulled pork at American Ice Company (917 V Street NW); there’s something incredibly satisfying about pairing tangy, crunchy cabbage with the rich, tender pork.

Do you have a favorite place to grab a pork sandwich and a beer? Let us know in the comments.

Small Bites

The happiest hour of our lives
Daikaya Izakaya (705 6th St NW) is rolling out a new happy hour menu this week, featuring $3 small plates and drink specials. The jewelbox of a bar will serve $4 draft beers, $6 wine by the glass, and carafes of sake and Daikaya Punch (Chu-Hai-Shochu, grapefruit juice and soda) for $6. Pair your drink with a selection of rotating small plates: Right now, guests can sample fried chicken karaage, grilled cherry tomates with miso-cheddar fondue sauce, or fried shishito peppers with sweet-hot jalapeno marmalade. Happy hour is from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Tony Bourdain traveling road show
Anthony Bourdain, the author of Kitchen Confidential who recently decamped from Travel Channel to CNN, and a strong contender for man with the world’s best job, will be closing out his “Guts and Glory” tour at DAR Constitution Hall this Monday. Tickets are $45-$175 and can be purchased online.

Sneak peek at G
Interested in Mike Isabella’s latest project? Next week, diners at Graffiato (707 Sixth Street NW) will have a chance to sample some of the sandwiches that will be on the menu at Isabella’s forthcoming G, a sister restaurant to Graffiato. Look for a roast suckling pig sub with broccoli rabe, provolone, and cherry peppers, a spicy mushroom panini with ramp pesto, and a classic chicken parm. The sandwiches will be available during lunch hours from May 13 to 17.
