Photo by Mr. T in DCThe field for the 2014 D.C. mayoral election will officially be larger than one on Saturday, when Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) formally jumps in the race. Wells, 56, is in his second term on the D.C. Council, where he has scoped out a profile of being the politician most interested in making the District “livable and walkable.”
So, whether by foot, bicycle, or even a car, Wells’ supporters will be headed out to Starburst Plaza, the six-way intersection of H Street, 15th Street, Benning Road, Bladensburg Road, Florida Avenue, and Maryland Avenue NE, on Saturday at noon. Wells will be launching his campaign three months after creating an exploratory committee to determine whether he has the base in a potentially crowded Democratic primary that, historically, serves as the effective general election.
Wells will join Councilmember Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) as the only declared candidates. Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) has rumbled about getting in the race, and whether Mayor Vince Gray will seek a second term is still unknown.
Wells is also campaigning to be the the District’s first white mayor. When announcing the exploratory committee, Wells said on The Kojo Nnamdi Show that two decisive victories in ethnically diverse Ward 6 are a strong basis. According to the 2012 U.S. Census, Ward 6 was 47 percent white non-Hispanic, 43 percent black non-Hispanic, and 4.8 percent Hispanic.
Since forming the exploratory committee, he says he has met with voters in all eight wards. He has also said that his campaign will be funded entirely by individual donations and that he will forgo any corporate contributions. Wells’ time on the Council has been marked by several differences with his colleagues over ethics rules. Although he has long been a prominent supporter of stronger ethics rules, he voted against a 2011 bill that he considered too weak.
“I’m running because I know we can clean up the corruption in city government and bring the same success we’ve achieved in Ward 6 to the rest of the city,” Wells said in an email to his supporters.
