Commuters on the Red Line got an unwelcome surprise Tuesday evening (yes, even more unwelcome than finding human waste on a Metro escalator), when a fire broke out under a railcar in Silver Spring.

Riders were offloaded from the train at the Takoma station. One of the offloaded riders told the Washington Examiner they were taken off because of a report of smoke. When the then unoccupied train arrived at the Silver Spring station shortly before 6 p.m., smoke was spotted beneath the third car. Video of the incident also shows small yet rather scary explosions.

The Silver Spring station was evacuated after the fire broke out. No injuries were reported.

Metro said normal service was restored by 9:20 p.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the transit agency said its “believed to be mechanical in nature.”

Metro originally reported the problem in a news release as, “Red Line service disrupted due to fire department response.”
