Ally Spaltro worked at a video store while moonlighting as the musician Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. Spaltro would leave CD-Rs of her mostly acoustic tracks at the records store next to her day job. Six years later, Spaltro does not need to be anonymous, as she has outgrown her small Maine town and is on the road for breakout success. Lady Lamb’s latest record Ripley Pine takes songs old and new and adds all sorts of instrumentation previously lacking. With a bevy of stings, horns, drums, and back-up vocals, Spaltro’s sketches come to life. “Bird Balloons” is a scathing break-up track and the highlight of the record. A live staple, the track is ‘s metaphors for love are way beyond Spaltro’s 23 years, with the final kiss-off being the sweetest.
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper plays tonight with Xenia Rubinos and Healing Power at the Black Cat. Tickets $12.
