With disaster relief crews only beginning to assess the damage caused by a two-mile-wide tornado that swept through Moore, Okla. yesterday, it is still far from known just how much money will be needed to repair the flattened town of 55,000.
People can donate $10 to the American Red Cross’ relief efforts by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999. Though one D.C. native with strong ties to Oklahoma just gave a big gift that probably wasn’t sent via text message.
Kevin Durant, the small forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder, donated $1 million to the Red Cross, the organization said today. Durant, who grew up in D.C., has played his entire career with the Thunder organization. (They were still the Seattle SuperSonics in his rookie season.) Moore is about 11 miles from Oklahoma City.
Even if you’re not a successful basketball player, there are still plenty of ways for D.C. residents to contribute to relief efforts in Oklahoma.
