An off-duty Arlington deputy sheriff is being questioned after he was involved in a fatal shooting in Alexandria, according to the Alexandria Police Department.
In a press release, the shooting of the unidentified victim is described as a “suspicious death.” The deputy sheriff involved in the shooting is being interviewed by detectives.
Shortly after midnight, officers responded to reports of a person being shot. The victim was found in the 100 block of Lynhaven Drive in Alexandria and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“There was an altercation between the two,” Alexandria Police Lt. Mark Bergin told WTOP. “We don’t yet know all of the details about that.”
Update: The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Julian Dawkins, according to NBC Washington. The deputy’s name is Craig Patterson and he is a 17 year veteran of the force.
Second Update: The deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
