Via DC Water

Crews from DC Water and the District Department of Transportation continue to be stationed around the clock at the sinkhole that opened up Tuesday at the intersection of 14th and F streets NW.

And though DC Water still has no firm estimate for when the repairs to its damaged sewer line might be complete, allowing closed roads to finally re-open, the water utility tweeted out the above photo of just how deep the sinkhole goes. That’s a 114-year-old brick-encased sewer line at the bottom of the 15-foot maw. Repairs are also being slowed by old trolley lines running beneath 14th Street.

Officials still don’t know what caused the sinkhole to open up on Tuesday afternoon and start ruining several days’ worth of commutes. But 14th Street remains closed between New York and Pennsylvania avenues NW, and F Street is shut between 13th and 15th streets NW. Metro continues to redirect its 52, 54, and 11Y buses around the affected area.

But in the mean time, enjoy this eagle’s nest view of the sinkhole. And, if you must, you can buy a sinkhole cocktail up the street at Ceiba, buy a sinkhole T-shirt, or even follow a sinkhole parody Twitter account.
