More than 48 hours into the ongoing fascination over the still-unexplained sinkhole that swallowed a busy downtown intersection, vehicular life is beginning to return to normal this afternoon. The District Department of Transportation says that with this evening’s rush hour, it is re-opening two southbound lanes on 14th Street NW.
Drivers headed eastbound on New York Avenue, F Street, and G Street NW will be allowed to take a right turn onto 14th Street headed south only. Meanwhile, curbside parking on that side of the road remains suspended. Metro announced that its southbound 52 and 54 buses to L’Enfant Plaza have resumed their normal route.
Northbound 14th Street, though, remains closed between Pennsylvania and New York avenue, as does F Street in both directions between 13th and 15th Streets NW.
Meanwhile, DC Water still has no idea what caused the 15-foot-deep chasm to open up the other day. And now it is also examining a second, smaller sinkhole that opened up nearby. Yes, there’s the big sinkhole, and now there’s SON OF SINKHOLE! (h/t @JoanArkham)
