The Democratic primary for next year’s mayoral election will grow again June 8, when Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) gets in the race. Evans, 59, will join a field that already includes his colleagues Tommy Wells, who kicked off his campaign May 13, and Muriel Bowser, who was the first to file her candidacy on March 23.

Evans’ announcement, which was first reported by NBC4’s Tom Sherwood, will take place at 10 a.m. outside Le Diplomat, the recently opened French restaurant at 14th and Q streets NW. The Stephen Starr-owned bistro features brunch entrées ranging from $11 to $28, increasingly typical for the neighborhood where new upscale restaurants open seemingly every week. Evans, who has served on the D.C. Council since 1991, has long touted himself as a champion of business.

This is not Evans’ first bid for the mayoralty. He first ran for the job in 1998, finishing third in that year’s Democratic primary behind Anthony Williams and Kevin P. Chavous Sr.

With next year’s primary scheduled for April 1—though the D.C. Council is deliberating a bill that would move the vote back to June—Evans will have 10 months to slug it out with Wells and Bowser. Mayor Vince Gray, also a Democrat, has not yet signaled if he will seek a second term, while Councilmember David Catania, an independent, is rumored to be weighing a general election bid.
