A giant asteroid will pass by Earth today at just 3.6 million miles away. As Space.com points out, this is as close as an asteroid will come to our planet for at least the next 200 years.
To recap: 1998 QE2 is not going to destroy humanity. But what if, thought the fact-ignoring fatalists among us, the scientists are wrong? What happens then?
An impact calculator provided by the site KillerAsteroids.com allows users to visualize what would happen if an asteroid 1.2 miles wide hit their area. Today’s asteroid measures 1.7 miles across, so things would be even worse for D.C. than the below maps show.
So, yeah, D.C. would be pretty dead! But at least Washingtonians who stayed put wouldn’t have to deal with their clothing igniting, like those unlucky souls in parts of Pennsylvania and Virginia.
