It might be time to replace “#Natitude” with an emotion that actually exists as a real word: Panic.
Stephen Strasburg was placed on the 15-day disabled list today, retroactive to last Saturday with a strain of his right latissimus dorsi muscle. (Silver lining: That’s in his back, not his arm.) While the Nationals have gone plenty long without Strasburg in the past, today’s roster move is yet another setback to a season that has not gone as anticipated.
Instead of living up to the expectations of being the best on-paper team in Major League Baseball, the Nationals, 59 games into the season, find themselves one game under .500 and in third place in the National League East following last night’s 10-1 loss to the normally pathetic New York Mets.
And to reiterate just how woeful the Nationals are right now, last night’s blowout defeat at the hands of a team filled with untested nobodies isn’t all that atypical for this season. Over at the Post, James Wagner breaks down the records compiled by league-leading teams over the past seven seasons and finds that, on average, those teams lost games by six or more runs 10.8 times a year. The Nationals did that nine times through June 5.
Oh, and it just keeps getting worse. Bryce Harper, who has been on the disabled list since May 27 and is due to return next Tuesday, won’t be back any time soon. The swelling in his right knee caused by a case of bursitis hasn’t gone down. In fact, MASN reports, Harper’s knee became more swollen after a rehabilitation session in which Harper tried running in a pool.
So instead of rejoining the Nationals in Colorado next week, Harper is instead headed to Alabama to visit Dr. James Andrews, the orthopedist to the sports stars. According to MASN, Andrews could tell the Nationals that Harper will only be sidelined a few more days. Or he could schedule surgery to remove the bursa sac in Harper’s knee, which would keep the 20-year-old outfielder out another two to three weeks.
Nothing’s been right since Teddy won.
