Residents of D.C. and the surrounding area will soon be able to eat like a vice president. The Wilmington, Del.-based Capriotti’s sandwich chain announced plans today to open 12 shops in the District, Maryland, and Virginia, bringing to the local market sandwiches that are reputedly the favorite of Vice President Joe Biden.
Capriotti’s, which was founded in Wilmington in 1976 and has since expanded to 89 locations in the mid-Atlantic, West Coast, Texas, and Florida, serves hot and cold submarine sandwiches stuffed with store-carved meats and other ingredients. Among the more famous menu items is the Bobbie, a roll crammed with hand-pulled turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mayonnaise.
Washington Business Journal reports that the first of the dozen stores will be opened in downtown D.C. in a location between 1,500 and 2,500 square feet.
As for the vice president, Biden has a long history with Capriotti’s. He reportedly ate at one of its Wilmington locations on the regular during his time as a U.S. Senator from Delaware. Since moving into the U.S. Naval Observatory, he has hired Capriotti’s to cater his inaugural lunch and during debate preparation sessions last year ahead of his face-off with Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan.
Biden’s office did not respond to a request for comment about which Capriotti’s sandwich the vice president prefers.
