The people of Washington have spoken with their wallets, and they have said “Yes!” to cake pops.

A Kickstarter to help turn Yael Krigman’s online cake pop business into D.C.’s first brick-and-mortar cakepoppery was successfully funded this weekend, raising over $74,000 in one month. Over 660 backers gave money.

“I am positively ecstatic that my Kickstarter campaign was a success,” Krigman said in an email. “It was incredible to see so many people work so hard to help spread the word about my campaign to raise start-up capital for DC’s first cakepoppery. The fact that over 600 people were willing to support Baked by Yael by pre-ordering cake pops is confirmation that I’m on the right track. I can’t wait until I open my cakepoppery so I can meet the hundreds of people who backed my Kickstarter campaign and thank them in person.”

For the uninitiated, a cake pop is piece of cake rolled into a ball and stuck on a stick. They have been called a “cupcake killer,” but it seems likely that D.C. has enough room in its gut for both cupcakes and cake pops.

Krigman is hopeful the cakepoppery will open this November.
