Yes, this is a scooter in the Gallery Place Metro station. Photo by Michael Seafarer.

There are so many questions raised by this photo of a person driving what appears to be a scooter through the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station over the weekend.

Michael Seafarer, the man who took the photo, told WJLA he saw the person cruising through the heavily trafficked Metro station on Saturday evening. The mysterious driver “honked his horn and yelled for people to get out of his way before riding onto an escalator and took off from the station.” To where? No one knows.

Other questions raised by the photo include: Who is this? How did this person enter the station? Was the driver in a rush? Is riding a scooter through a Metro station actually faster than taking the Metro? So many questions, so few answers.

This is apparently not the only time the rider came through the Gallery Place-Chinatown station this weekend. DCist Twitter follower Amanda Peterson Beadle reported seeing the scooter in the same Metro station on Sunday around 11 a.m.

A WMATA public information officer told DCist, “We are aware of the photo and are reviewing it.” He added, “It should also be noted that the transport or use of unauthorized vehicles within the Metrorail system is prohibited.”
