For the third year in a row, proud District residents will gather in Dupont Circle this evening to show off their city pride on Flag Day. There is, of course, a political slant to the event, held by Let Us Vote D.C.

Residents who think D.C. should have the 51st star on America’s flag and the voting rights that come with it will descend upon Dupont Circle at 6 p.m. tonight to show off D.C. flag tattoos, actual flags and other flag-emblazoned items. For non-inked Washingtonians out there, Let Us Vote D.C. will distribute temporary D.C. flag tattoos, as well as stickers.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton is once again expected to speak at the event.

For the first time, a D.C. flag with “No Taxation Without Representation” printed on it was flown over the Wilson Building, which houses Mayor Vincent Gray’s and the D.C. Council’s offices and chambers. Mayor Gray simply tweeted, “Happy Flag Day, DC! Fly your US and DC flags proudly,” while mayoral hopeful Tommy Wells posed with the city’s flag for a photo.

If you can’t be there in person, there’s another way to show your statehood support on Flag Day. As Clinton Yates pointed out, the site Neighbors United for D.C. Statehood encourages residents to post photos of themselves with the D.C. flag to build support for the District of Columbia becoming New Columbia. (Or whatever better name we think of.)
