The Washington Post has more details about what motivated 24-year-old Porsha Evans to allegedly steal an eight-week-old kitten from the Washington Humane Society last month. Evans told detectives she took the kitten from a May 26 adoption event by stashing her in a purse because she had given up her dog and couldn’t afford another pet for her two children.
“I apologize for everything,” Evans said in a brief telephone interview Thursday. “I am truly sorry for what happened.”
Evans said she had to give up her pit bull because it had grown too big for her two daughters — a 5-year-old and 3-month-old — and the older child wanted another pet. She said she couldn’t afford the $85 adoption fee.
“I really can’t afford anything right now,” Evans said. “I really didn’t mean to do what I did. It was one of those spur-of-the-moment things. I wanted to do something for my daughter.”
Perhaps unbeknown to Evans, the Washington Humane Society regularly lowers the price of adoptions. The New York Avenue Adoption Center, from where Evans allegedly stole the kitten, recently held an event where potential adopters could name their own price, for example. Once adopted (or stolen), pets also require food and veterinary care, which costs money.
Callista, the kitten taken, was found by detectives at Evan’s home a few days after she went missing. She was returned to the Washington Humane Society and has since been adopted.
Evans pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge in D.C. Superior Court yesterday, according to online records. A status hearing will be held on July 2.
