Metropolitan Police Department officers are investigating a grisly shooting that happened early this morning at a home in the Petworth neighborhood leaving one man hospitalized and the shooter dead.

In the incident, which took place shortly before 6 a.m. at a residence on the 500 block of Quincy Street NW, a young man shot an older man who police say was his father or grandfather, according to Officer Araz Alali, an MPD spokesman. The shooter then turned the gun on himself and died in an apparent suicide.

The older man, who was shot once, was breathing and conscious when he was transported to a nearby hospital, though his condition was unknown, Alali says. The identities of the victim and the deceased shooter have not yet been released.
