Remember what your mother always said? Don’t believe everything you read on Twitter. The scaffolding around the Washington Monument won’t be illuminated tonight, despite a tweet from National Park Service to the contrary.

A tweet signed by NPS director Jonathan Jarvis an NPS employee with the initials “JJ” reported that tonight was the night the scrim around the monument would illuminate the evening sky. But NPS spokesperson Carol Johnson told DCist the work on the scrim is not yet completed. The tweet has since been deleted.

The monument was damaged during the August 2011 earthquake that scared the bejeezus out of the East Coast. Scaffolding was placed around the structure so repairs could be done to damaged stones. A piece of fabric is being hung outside the monument, so it can be illuminated to create a pretty picture on the fourth of July and to distract from the fact visitors cannot enter the building. But it seems D.C. will have to wait a few more days before that happens.
