Eleanor Friedberger is best known as the singer of the experimental pop duo The Fiery Furnaces. In 2011 Friedberger stepped out on her own with her first solo record, Last Summer. Unlike her work with Fiery Furnaces, Friedberger’s solo output is more direct and instantly enjoyable. Friedberger just released her second individual LP, Personal Record. It’s her best album to date, building on the highlights of Last Summer. Without the heavy handed production and instrumentation of her brother Matthew Friedberger, Eleanor’s songs shine like they have never before. “Stare at the Sun” is one of the record’s best power-pop gems. The track has a West Coast ’70s sound that is quite in vogue right now. Friedberger has always had a knack for wordplay but never have her lyrics been so succinct.

Eleanor Friedberger plays Thursday June 27th with TEEN at U Street Music Hall. Tickets are $15.
