A black bear was tranquilized and captured in a Northwest D.C. yard this morning. No, he does not belong to the National Zoo.
The Metropolitan Police Department sounded the alarm around 9 a.m. when they tweeted that a bear had been spotted near the 4900 Block of Rockwood Parkway NW. An MPD spokesperson originally said the bear was captured and taken to the National Zoo. A spokesperson for the zoo, however, said the bear was not taken there.
The zoo, which has had quite a week, then confirmed in a tweet that the animal was “not our bear.”
In a statement, the Washington Humane Society said the bear will be released “in a to-be-determined location outside of the District.” More information about the bear’s capture will be available later today.
WAMU’s Martin Di Caro tweeted photos of the tranquilized bear, who weighs about 100 pounds, being carried away.
