Courtesy Washington Humane Society. The woman who admitted to stealing a kitten named Callista from a Washington Humane Society adoption center in May will perform community service for the cat-napping.
As was first reported by Marc Selinger of the Examiner, 24-year-old Porsha Evans entered into a “deferred prosecution agreement” this week. If she serves 32 hours of community service by Nov. 1, she won’t be prosecuted for misdemeanor theft, according to court records.
Evans allegedly carried the kitten out of the New York Avenue adoption center in her purse on May 27. Police tracked her down using a sign-in sheet and surveillance video. The kitten was located at Evans’ home and returned to the Washington Humane Society.
In an interview with the Post, Evans said she stole the kitten because she couldn’t afford to get her two children a new pet: “I really didn’t mean to do what I did. It was one of those spur-of-the-moment things. I wanted to do something for my daughter.”
Caliista is now living out of the spotlight with a forever family. Request for comment from the Washington Humane Society regarding Evans’ community service agreement has not been returned.
