A group that is partially backed by Wal-Mart has been handing out fliers asking Mayor Vince Gray to oppose the “living wage” bill recently passed by the D.C. Council. Fun fact: The fliers don’t mention Wal-Mart.

DCist contributor Andrew Wiseman posted a photo of one of the fliers on his New Columbia Heights blog. The handout calls for Gray to oppose the Large Retailer Accountability Act and was handed out today at the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro station. The flier doesn’t identify the group responsible for campaign, but does have a link to a petition from Don’t Block D.C. Progress.

As the Post reported back in March, Don’t Block D.C. Progress is supported in part by Wal-Mart. This information is not posted on the group’s website.

However, Wal-Mart is mentioned on Don’t Block’s website as a retailer that won’t be able to bring “thousands of jobs” to the city, thanks to the bill. Macy’s, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Target are also listed.

The D.C. Council voted 8-5 last week to require companies that gross at least $1 billion in revenue to pay employees at stores larger than 75,000 square feet at least $12.50 per hour. In response, Wal-Mart said it will not build three of the retailer’s six planned D.C. stores.

The bill is now in Gray’s hands. Deputy Mayor Victor Hoskins has spoken against the bill, and all conventional wisdom suggests a likelihood that Gray will veto it. Among the stores that Wal-Mart has said is canceling is one at Ward 7’s Skyland Town Center, which Gray insisted the retailer include if it wanted to enter the D.C. market at all.
