Sad news out of the National Zoo today: One of its cheetahs has died.

An initial autopsy indicates that Tumai, a 13-year-old female, died Thursday night from a tumor that caused her spleen to rupture, according to a news release from the zoo. A final pathology report will be released with more information.

Tumai came to Washington from the Phoenix Zoo in 2004, according to the release. That year, she gave birth to two male and two female cubs, who live at the Cape May Zoo in New Jersey, the Wildlife Safari Park in Oregon and the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin. It was the National Zoo’s first litter of cheetah cubs.

According to the zoo, cheetahs in captivity usually live eight to 12 years.

The zoo’s Cheetah Conservation Station now houses three adult male cheetahs (Draco, Granger, and Zabini) and two sub-adult cheetahs (Carmelita and Justin).
